| | Lillian Lincoln Lambert Born on a farm off a dirt road in the segregated South, Lillian Lincoln Lambert gives new meaning to the aphorism, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” Although she wore burlap bag dresses to school, she sensed in her bones that there had to be a better life beyond the farm. She gutted out menial jobs as a maid and typist in New York City and Washington, D.C., before realizing that the journey was internal and that education was her ticket to a new world. This is the story of the first African American woman to graduate from Harvard Business School in 1969 – an era that became forever linked with the civil rights and burgeoning women’s rights movements. This is also the story of a pioneering woman who broke down racial and social barriers and became a successful entrepreneur – achieving the American dream on her own terms. For 25 years, Lillian Lincoln Lambert was President and CEO of Centennial One, Inc., a building maintenance company she founded in 1976 on a few thousand dollars operating out of her garage. With initial sales of $150,000 and 20 part-time workers, she grew the company to $20 million in sales with more than 1,200 employees. Headquartered in Landover, Maryland, with branch offices in Baltimore, Maryland, and Richmond, Virginia, the company expanded its footprint to the metropolitan Boston and Rhode Island markets. Her clients included blue-chip companies such as Dulles National Airport, ABC News, and Hewlett-Packard. In 2001, she sold Centennial One. Due to the passionate response of audiences to her speeches and comments from admirers who exclaim “Lillian, you must write a book,” she has just completed her memoir, The Road To Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond, to be published by John Wiley & Sons in January 2010. Her memoir will inspire readers of all races and backgrounds to pursue the American dream by surmounting obstacles that come between their vision and goals. Ms. Lambert received a BA from Howard University in business administration in 1966 and an MBA from Harvard University in 1969, where she made history as the school’s first African American woman to receive an MBA. In 2003, Harvard Business School awarded her the “Alumni Achievement Award,” the highest award the school bestows on its alumni. An important factor in her receiving this award was her active involvement with the business school’s efforts to diversify its student body. She is the recipient of numerous other awards, including Harvard Business School’s African American Alumni Association’s Bert King Award; MBA of the Year, Harvard Business School African American Alumni Association; Small Business Person of the Year, State of Maryland; Entrepreneur of the Year, Black MBA Association; Top 50 Women-Owned Businesses, Washington Business Journal; and Finalist, Entrepreneur of the Year, Ernst & Young. Currently, she is on the Board of Visitors at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. A captivating public speaker – a blend of Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou – she speaks on topics she knows best – entrepreneurship, self-improvement, and resilience. She has shared her hard-won wisdom on a range of business and inspirational topics for nearly 30 years to audiences small and large. In September of 2007, Ms. Lambert traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa, to speak to the South African Black Vintners Association on the importance of building alliances to gain competitive advantage. A representative sample of her speeches include: “Lessons Learned: If I Had to Do It Over”; “Rising Above Your Environment to Reach Your Goals”; “Guiding Women to Wholeness”; “Dare to Be All That You Can Be.” Ms. Lambert lives in Mechanicsville, Virginia, with her husband, John A. Lambert, Sr. She is an avid golfer and enjoys traveling, reading, wine collecting, and listening to jazz. Ms. Lambert is active in her community, and she sings tenor in her church choir. www.LillianLincolnLambert.com | | | | | Dr. Steve Taubman Dr. Steve Taubman is the president and founder of Inner Selling Institute (ISI), a company dedicated to helping sales professionals achieve results, and creator of The Mindfulness Process, a powerful system for achieving personal and professional freedom.
